A "hats off to...." spot!

This week I have to take my hat off to author Eoin Colfe, for his Artemis Fowl series. I haven't read it yet myself, but any series that makes reading more fun for my 13 year old son is great with me!

My son Joshua likes reading fiction as much as going to the dentist! He doesn't mind books per se; he'll read straight through the Guiness Book of World Records, Ripley's Believe It or Not, or a subscription to National Geographic for Kids! But fiction? Cue the sighs, stomps, groans and drama!

We've tried all sorts - drama, sci fi, EOTW, horror, romance, spy books, fantasy... the lot! It's rare he'll want to finish one. So when he reached the end of book 1 and asked for not only book 2 but the whole series of Artemis Fowl, I was thrilled! His review: "It's a little bit weird but it's really good!"

Kindle Store Wishlist update

A while back, I wrote about the little inconvenience that Amazon.com didn't have an Add to Wish List button for Kindle books. Not only that, the Amazon.com wish list didn't sync with the Kindle shopping "save for later".

Well both little issues appear to be fixed!"

1. On Amazon.com, not only can you now add a kindle edition to your wish list, you can set up a separate wish list just for eBooks and save them to it.

2. Even better, when shopping the Kindle Store from your Kindle, you no longer have to use the Save For Later button! Now you can "Add to Wish List", select which Wish List - and it syncs with your Wish List on Amazon.com!

About time!

Happy New Year!

Yeah, it's been some time! I've been a very neglectful blogger, I know! Between holiday bustle, winter colds and the slog of work, my Kindle has also been somewhat neglected too *shock* I know!

For the past, um, 20 or so years I've read something every single day. Over the past few years, I read more & more - read with morning coffee, when the family watches TV, in the queue at the supermarket. With Kindle & text to speech, I'd even be reading in the car or when weeding the garden.

But about 2 months ago, I got into a reading funk. For the first time ever, I didn't want to read. I got a bit worried. I downloaded a bunch of books. Then I hit the freebies (it could get expensive!). About the best I could manage was a couple of blogs and the Readers Digest (which is pretty good on Kindle, BTW).

Some of the freebies kinda depressed me. There are a lot of not-so-good books out there, to be polite about it, and I seemed to download each and every one of them. ugh! Bad horror, cheesy dramas and the oddest thing - the Christian fiction hiding as a thriller. Don't get me wrong - I've nothing against Christian fiction, or any religious fiction. Just that if I wanted to read it, I'd read it. If I want to avoid it, I do that too. So getting halfway through a couple of thrillers - and even a horror - recently to have it turn into a pious ranting wasn't my cup of tea. And I promptly deleted them.

"Next!"

So what have I read? Wow, very little!! I did finish a few Cesar Millan (Dog Whisperer) books (Kindle edition) which were good reads. But I didn't even start my long awaited Under The Dome yet! I KNOW!! I told you - major reading funk.

Right now, I am reading The Keeper, by Sarah Langan that I got as a freebie ages ago. It's pretty creepy, actually. Plus I am re-reading the fabulous Hunger Games with my 10 year old daughter. Love that she loves so many of the same books as I do! She's recently finished Oz Chronicles trilogy and keeps begging me to write to RW Ridley to find out about book #4!

Is there an Easy Way to Stop Smoking?

My husband & I recently put ourselves through the Allen Carr Easy Way to Stop Smoking program - probably the most celebrated & successful smoking cessation methods out there. Reviews on numerous websites for the past 20 years are always overwhelmingly positive & Allen's clinics are all over the world.

Although only available in UK as a Kindle edition, this book has had such a major impact on my life, that it's one that I have to review. EasyWay to Stop Smoking comes in various formats - a narrated CD & audio version (downloadable to Kindle), Kindle edition (for UK only at the moment) & online webcasts for numerous countries.

I confess, I've owned an older UK edition of this book for maybe 8 or 10 years. Being a 20+ a day smoker for 18 years, I wanted to stop but couldn't. I would read a bit of the book then stop. For months. Read a bit then stop. I tried reading it with my husband but since he doesn't like reading all that much & I don't like reading out loud all that much, we delayed again for another couple of years. I'd tried so many methods to quit - gum, patches, hypnotism etc etc, I spent the last 2 years utterly depressed at the idea of smoking every single day for the rest of my life.

A few weeks ago, I decided to try again and to drag my husband along with me. I bought him the CD to listen to (UK version), but with so many British references etc, and the documentary-style commentary, he didn't enjoy that so much either, so ultimately he ended up plumping for the $149 webcast seminar for the American audience. By the time he logged in, I'd read the book & I was already 24 hours smoke free. Repeat...... I'd read the book & I was already 24 hours smoke free.

He watched & I listened. By the time it was over, my husband was bouncing in his seat, ready to quit. And I was a 100% confirmed non-smoker. I never - EVER - wanted to smoke again. And now, I still don't want to smoke again. If someone walked in here right now and offered me $50k to smoke a cigarette, I wouldn't do it. Because I know I'd been signing back on to smoke all day, every day, for the rest of my life.

Don't get me wrong - Easy Way isn't a magic spell that suddenly stops all urge to smoke. That addiction still exists, but the way I view the drug is entirely different! I can see myself from the outside - in the eyes of a non smoker. I realize I don't need it, and that those urges are nothing more than my sub-conscious mind playing Pavlovian tricks on me, telling me it's time to light up, telling me this movie would be more fun with a cigarette, this coffee would taste better. All BS, of course. And I know it. Some days I have to repeat that a few more times than other days - my mind gets sneaky & tries to throw out an image of me smoking after dinner, but I know them for the tactics they are! That monster can't fool me!

The freaky thing is how strange my body has been feeling. And it makes me realize how much smoking effected my body: Since the day I became a non-smoker, I've been bit light headed, giddy. One day I felt almost drunk and was useless at work. I don't even drink! That's oxygen!

For days, my lips, face & hands have been tingling. Apparently that's nerve endings regrowing!
Little areas on my toes that have been completely numb for years - they have pins and needles!
Lights seem brighter. And I can SMELL things that I didn't realize had a smell before. And ugh! My office stinks of stale smoke. I'm tasting more - and frankly, Diet Coke isn't nearly as good as I thought it was! It's actually pretty gross. But that's a good thing too because I've been addicted to that nasty drink for even longer than I was a smoker!

Allen Carr says in his book that I would ENJOY being a non smoker. I'll be honest, I do get the odd craving. But it feels so good to be a non smoker for the first time in over 18 years, that I don't care about the cravings. I am so amazed at the changes that I can FEEL happening to me, that when a craving happens, I can gloat that the little monster inside of me is dying, and will soon be no more than a little ghost. I can take a breathe and imagine that monster shriveling up and dying.

It's not a magic book but it is an awakening. A way to help you step back and see cigarettes for what they really are, to understand them and yourself as a smoker, and yourself as a non smoker.

In all my previous attempts - patches, gum etc - I was always miserable, feeling deprived, hysterical & panicky but this way, I feel great. I feel in control (albeit woozy and light headed from all that oxygen!!) & for the first time in my adult life, I am a non smoker. For those who want to quit.... read the book. Or at least read the reviews on Amazon! An average 5 star rating, over 500 reviews - just for one edition. Other editions have the same 5 stars from hundreds of readers. I think it would be the most important and precious gift you could give to yourself!

Tip #12: Using Dictionary Look Up

One of my favorite features of the Kindle is the dictionary look up with the 5 way controller. Not only does the Kindle arrive pre-loaded with The New Oxford American Dictionary that you can access like any other ebook, you can also look up a word from the ebook you are reading, without leaving the book.

This is a feature I rapidly fell in love with. So much so, that when I now read regular paperbooks, my thumb automatically reaches for the 5-way when I reach a word I don't understand! For this feature alone, I'd miss my Kindle if I went back to regular books.

How do you use it?

Simply enough... when you come across a word you want to know more about, you use your 5-way to scroll up/down, left/right until you reach the word. At the bottom of the screen, a small box appears with a definition. In my example here, I scrolled to the word Monopoly. If the definition at the bottom doesn't seem to be enough, I might want to know more.

If you want to know more about the word, you click the enter button to take you to relevant page in the dictionary.

After clicking enter, you will now be within the dictionary and can read more definitions of the word (see image below). At that point, if you have what you want, you can click the "Back" button to return to your ebook.

If however you want more information, you can use your current placing within the dictionary to look up more information or search elsewhere.

To search elsewhere

If you look at the bottom of the screen in my image above, you will see the look-up word Monopoly still at the bottom. Move your 5-way to the right where it shows "search dictionary". This now opens the dictionary on the index where I might find more relevant entries in the dictionary & I can scroll to them. For my word Monopoly, there's also Monopoly capitalism and Monopoly money.

If that's not enough for you, keep moving your 5 way until you get more selections!

- my items (books, blogs, magazines or newspapers)
- store
- Google
- Wikipedia.

For the latter 3 options, you will need your Whispernet turned on so just click Menu & turn it on. Click the option you want & wait for the relevant page to open.

Note that at any time you want to get back to your ebook, you can click the back button.

Saving words

Just like your ebooks, when you are in the dictionary at any time you can bookmark pages, highlight sections and make notes. You can refer back to these later in the following ways:

- My Clippings (your personal folder of notes & highlights that is accessible on your Kindle or by uploading to your pc by USB)
- My Notes & Bookmarks (within the dictionary, click Menu and scroll down)
- Screenshots. See Tip #11: Taking a Kindle Screenshot

Personally I think this a fantastic & very valuable feature on the Kindle. With a paperbook, I can rarely be bothered to get out my dictionary but this makes it so easy that I do it all the time. Even with words I already know, I often use it to double check meanings or learn more about the words themselves.
